Requirements

Admission Requirements for M.A in African and Diaspora Studies

  • This programme is open to holders of Bachelor’s degree in any of the Arts, Humanities, Social science and Business based disciplines from the University of Lagos, University of the West Indies or any other recognised University.
  • A candidate may be required as a condition for admission, to undergo a selection process in the form of written and/or oral examination.
  • Candidates who have not completed the National Youth Service Corps programme (in the case of Nigeria) or currently undergoing a postgraduate programme need not apply. Such applicant will be automatically disqualified.
  • All academic transcripts of candidates must be presented on or before the commencement of the session for which admission is being sought.

Admission and Graduation Requirements for M.Phil in African and Diaspora Studies

a. Candidates for admission must possess a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from the University of Lagos or any other recognized and approved University with at least Second Class Upper Division Honours of the University of Lagos or any other recognized University.

OR

b. A Master’s degree in African Studies/African and Diaspora Studies or any of the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences or Business-based disciplines from the University of Lagos or any other recognized and approved University with a CGPA not below 3.50. Candidates must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree as specified above for the Master’s admission requirement.

 

M.Phil. in African and Diaspora Studies (Terminal)

Students who have completed a minimum of 6 units of Coursework and whose GPA is between 3.50-3.99 shall be asked to terminate at M.Phil. programme. Students who will terminate at the M.Phil. programme shall have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in coursework. They will also register for 4 units of seminars and 6 units of Dissertation.

 

Graduation Requirements

Candidates with the relevant Bachelor’s degree must offer and pass a minimum of 44 Units as follows:

  • 30 units of coursework at 800 Level
  • 4 units of coursework at 900 Level
  • 4 units of Seminars
  • 6 units of dissertation
  • OR apply to transfer to Ph.D. if the 36 units of coursework are passed with a minimum CGPA of 4.0.

Candidates with the relevant Master’s degree must offer and pass 14 units as follows:

  • 4 units of coursework at 900 Level
  • 4 units of Seminars
  • 6 units of dissertation
  • OR apply to transfer to Ph.D. if the 10 units of coursework and seminars are passed with a minimum CGPA of 4.0.
  • Meet other requirements of the school of postgraduate studies

Admission and Graduation Requirements for Ph.D African and Diaspora Studies

The following candidates may apply for a Ph.D. degree:

(a) Candidates who have already obtained an M.Phil. in African and Diaspora Studies or the equivalent from the University of Lagos or any other recognized university.

(b) Candidates with M.A. in African and Diaspora Studies or related disciplines with a minimum CGPA of 4.00. Candidates must have obtained a bachelor’s degree as specified for the master’s admission requirement.

(c) Candidates with M.Phil. in African and Diaspora Studies can convert to the Ph.D. programme after coursework with a minimum CGPA of 4.00.

Duration of Programme: (Full-time) Minimum of six semesters and a maximum of ten semesters.

(Part-time): Minimum of eight semesters and maximum of 12 semesters.

Programme Graduation Requirement

Candidates must offer and pass 20 units as follows:

4 units of Coursework

4 units of Seminar

12 units of Dissertation/Thesis

Meet other requirements of the School of Postgraduate Studies.
