LECTURE BY PROF. ANTHONY OKEREGBE

Prof. Anthony Okeregbe is a Professor of Philosophy and Head of Department of Philosophy, University of Lagos. An associate member of the institute of the African and Diaspora Studies, University of Lagos, he delivered a lecture on Wednesday, June 17th, 2026.

TOPIC: ALADURA SPIRITUALITY AND THE THEOLOGICAL EPISTEMOLOGY OF AFFECT IN AFRICAN PNEUMATIC CHRISTIANITY: A REFLECTION

Prof. Anthony Okeregbe highlighted the growing prominence of performative Christianity, characterised by fervent prayer, music, prophecy, healing, and communal worship. He argued that these practices represent more than religious expressions; they constitute meaningful ways through which believers encounter and know the divine.

The lecture further engaged with the philosophical ideas of Senegalese scholar and statesman Léopold Sédar Senghor, particularly his concept of “reason by embrace,” which proposes that knowledge can emerge through participation, emotion, rhythm, and communion rather than detached analytical reasoning alone.

According to Dr. Okeregbe, Aladura spirituality demonstrates that prayer, prophecy, and healing are not merely devotional activities but also constitute important epistemic practices through which communities construct meaning, identity, and relationships with the Transcendent.

The lecture reaffirmed the significance of African religious traditions in contemporary theological discourse and underscored the need to recognise embodied spiritual experiences as legitimate sources of knowledge and meaning.
