LECTURE BY PROF. DR. PEJU LAYIWOLA

Prof. Dr. Peju Layiwola, a Mellon Curatorial Fellow at the Stanley Museum of Art, University of Iowa, USA delivered a virtual lecture on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. 

TOPIC: TRACING THE PROVENANCE OF A RITUAL OBJECT: THE TIMI OF EDE’S ALUBÀTÁA ṢÀNGÓ AT THE STANLEY MUSEUM OF ART, IOWA

Her conclusion stresses that museums must critically reassess such collections, improve transparency, and address the ethical implications of holding culturally significant objects taken from their original contexts.

Prof. Peju Layiwola showcased objects that was acquired by the stanley museum of Art through a new York dealer in 1982, but its origin are unclear and likely tied to an illegal removal from a Nigerian shrine.
