IADS CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Celebrating excellence and innovation at the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 this Black History Month! 
Oluwatomisin Ayodeji Nejo of International School, Lagos emerged the winner of this year’s essay competition entitled “Entrepreneurship as a solution to unemployment in Nigeria”. Mariam Yunusa Ogaji of Yaba College of Technology Secondary School came second position while Aliyah Adebusolami Baruwa of Grace High School, Gbagada took the third place. We commend all the students that participated in this year’s essay writing and a special congratulation goes to the top three winners. Your visionary ideas and dedication inspire change and hope for a brighter future in Nigeria and beyond.

Professor Sunday Adebisi, Director, ARUA Centre of Excellence for Unemployment & Skills Development, University of Lagos delivered a thought-provoking lecture that delved into challenges facing adoption of vocational education. He stated that vocational training, entrepreneurship and organized labour are integral components in addressing economic and social injustices in Nigeria. He concluded that Nigeria can dismantle barriers to economic participation, reduce inequalities and empower marginalized groups by investing into vocational education.

IADS appreciates all the brilliant minds who participated and showcased their talents and insights on the theme of this year’s event: ‘The Role of Vocational Training, Entrepreneurship, and Organized Labour in Combating Injustice in Nigeria.’ Your contributions are paving the way for meaningful progress and empowerment.

In addition, the Government Technical College, Ikotun—one of the leading institutions under the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board—is proud to present an art exhibition in honor of Black History Month. This special showcase highlights the incredible talent and cultural richness of our students.
