Prof. Paul Ugor, a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow at the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies organised a performance with Yinka Davies, a renowned vocalist on Thursday, July 6, 2023 for the graduate students of the Institute, to showcase the basic assumptions of Cultural Theory. In attendance were the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola and the DVC, Development Services, Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa.

This event tracks the extraordinary ways in which culture, structure and politics are all intertwined. The performance was geared towards shifting cultural theory from its infamous status, a mysterious intellectual endeavor to a much more productive and pragmatic academic exercise through which the students can thoughtfully reflect about the world around them. The students were made to see culture as a signifying system from the perspective of Yinka Davies’ performance as text.
