IADS CONGRATULATES THE WINNER OF RAHAMON BELLO AWARD FOR THE BEST Ph.D. THESIS IN AFRICAN STUDIES

The Institute of African and Diaspora Studies, University of Lagos announced the winner of Rahamon Bello award for the best Ph.D. thesis in African Studies Today, November 28, 2024.

Dr. Jacob Katumusiime, a Postdoctoral Research fellow at the Institute of Social Research, Makarere University, Kampala-Uganda, emerged the winner this year. The award winning thesis entitled: “Beyond Religio-Cultural Violence: A Historico-Political Re
contextualization of the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten
Commandments of God” was submitted to Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) in November 2023. Congratulations to Dr. Katumusiime and his supervisor Prof. Mahmood Mamdani.

His work, as described by the assessors, is an extensive, meticulously researched, and well-articulated treatment of the activities of the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God (MRTCG) and the mass violence that the religious movement orchestrated. They also acknowledged that the considerable compilation and analysis of data is commendable and charismatic. In addition, the assessors confirmed that the methodological approach is profound and breathes new life into the treatment of modern historiography.

Dr. Kafayat Oshodi

Dr. Oluwafunminiyi Wasiu Raheem, a lecturer at the Department of Tourism Studies, Osun State University, Oshogo came second position. His Thesis “A History of Sacred Water Bodies (Holy Wells) In Yorùbá land Up To 2016″, a Ph.D. obtained in October 2023 from the Department of History & International Studies, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria.

The third position goes to Dr. Kafayat Omowonuola Oshodi of the Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Her Thesis is titled ” Spousal Deployment and Perceived Perinatal Risks Experiences Among Army Personnel Wives in Selected Barracks in The Southwest, Nigeria”

We congratulate the winners of this prestigious award. The presentation of the award will take place at the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies, J.P Clark Building, University of Lagos, on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 11 AM WAT.
