TRADITIONAL MEDICINE EXHIBITION DAY 2026

The Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS), University of Lagos, hosted the Traditional Medicine Exhibition Day 2026, an event dedicated to highlighting the relevance of traditional medicine to healthcare, research, and the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage. 

The programme, held under the theme “Contribution of Traditional Medicine to Universal Health Coverage,” brought attention to the role of indigenous medical knowledge, medicinal plants, research, and community-based healthcare practices in addressing contemporary health challenges.

A major focus of the event was a presentation titled “The Role of Traditional Medicine in the Prevention & Management of Diabetes,” delivered by Dr. Akinmayowa Akin-Otiko. The presentation examined diabetes as an increasingly significant health challenge and considered the potential contribution of traditional medicine and medicinal plants to its prevention and management.

The discussion also introduced the two major forms of diabetes highlighted in the presentation. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body produces little or no insulin, while Type 2 diabetes, identified as the most common type, is associated with the body’s resistance to insulin.

Against this background, the presentation explored the question of why traditional medicine remains relevant to healthcare in Africa. It highlighted the widespread use of traditional medicine on the continent, noting a WHO-attributed figure that 80 per cent of Africans rely on traditional medicine for some part of their healthcare. The presentation further noted the long history of traditional approaches in the prevention and management of diabetes, the accessibility of plants and herbs used in traditional healthcare, and the increasing combination of traditional approaches with modern treatment.

Beyond the presentation on diabetes, the Traditional Medicine Exhibition Day provided an avenue for showcasing research, practices, innovations, and knowledge relating to traditional medicine. The exhibition created a space where participants could engage with the relationship between indigenous healthcare practices and contemporary health challenges.
