Dr. Moses Yakubu, a Research Associate Professor at the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies delivered his PI (Principal Investigator) lecture today, July 16, 2025. He discussed the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria.
He highlighted the Operation Safe Corridor, established in 2016, which has reintegrated 2,660 low-risk defectors since 2017. The program includes public awareness campaigns, startup kits, and mental health support.
However, challenges include the lack of a long-term legal framework for high-risk members and limited community involvement. Opposition cites concerns about recidivism, community trust, and justice. Proponents argue for reduced violence and community development. Yakubu emphasized the need for inclusive, victim-centered reintegration with restorative justice.
